Interview with the band Night's Edge
The trio Night's Edge has been around since 2018. They have released several records, the latest of which is called the World that never was and will be officially released on August 21, 2025. Their musical focus is very intertwined, so you have to get a taste of them. They have something to show, and the combination of musical influences makes them a very interesting group.
Alan - Hi guys. How are you? What's new in Baltimore?
Brian – We are doing well, very busy with our upcoming album release, but doing well nevertheless! Baltimore is the same as it always is, always a good show to go to and an enthusiastic crowd to be a part of, or play to.
Alan - Have you existed in this line-up since 2018? Brian Haran, Damian Remmell, Dan Hunt. Who do you play on what?
Brian - We have been through a few lineup changes, but Dan has been with the band since 201,9 and Damian joined in early 2023. I (Brian) founded the band back in 2018. Dan plays drums, Damian plays guitar, and I sing, play bass, and take care of all of the keys and orchestration arrangements.
Alan - How many full-length albums have you released during your existence? And how different are they?
Brian - We are about to release our fourth album, The World That Never Was, on August 21st. Each album has been a progression from the last, and I think we really started to find our sound on our third album, Strangers, which came out in 2023. Nevertheless, this newest album is a big step forward even from that.
Alan - Speaking of the difference. You have a very different approach from what we are used to. At least for me. Each album is a little different, but let's take this latest one, the World that Never Was. Here you have alternative metal again connected to alternative rock, that's the basis. And now what else do I hear there? New Wave, indie rock, emo core, pop, gothic – uffffff there's a lot. Still, from my point of view, you're very interesting, and everything fits together well.

Brian - Thank you! While we don’t necessarily seek out any specific genres in our music, we definitely do cover a lot of ground. I think a big part of that is that we have so many different influences and they all come across in different parts of our music. From Mastodon to Type O Negative to Deftones to Coheed and Cambria and beyond. I think rather than trying to fall into a particular subgenre, our music is tied together by its atmosphere and songwriting. I think that propulsive and interesting arrangements are one of the defining features of our songs, and those arrangements sometimes take us into strange directions!
Alan – When we've discussed music and your focus a bit, we could discuss the whole thing. Can you briefly describe the songs? Both lyrically and musically?
Someone To Stay – A guitar forward proggy rocker that gives the listener a little taste of the different elements we are bringing forward on the album. Lyrically, the song sets up the themes of identity and the loss thereof that are explored throughout.
If You Loved Me – This is the lead single and probably the most straightforward song on the album. Very catchy chorus with a lot of HIM influence, doomy bridge, and a shredding guitar solo. Lyrics are a fresh take on a familiar subject – love gone wrong.
Man of Many Faces – This is one of my favorites on the album. Starts with a crushing riff and builds towards a super fun and catchy pop punk style chorus, complete with “woah-oahs” and claps. The song broaches the topics of the faces that we put on for others.
Love Fiction – The “chillest” song on the album, Love Fiction, is thick with vibes and atmosphere while still being propulsive and rocking. Really dark, really brooding tune that describes an intimate relationship with one’s darker tendencies and feelings, seeing them as home and a familiar safe place.
Wish You Wouldn't – Damian says this song gives him Van Halen vibes and i get it. Very 80’s midtempo anthem with a really catchy chorus and another ripping guitar solo. The song talks about the feeling of being unable to relate to those around you.
Overdue For Destruction – This one is a ripper, a straight-up Alt metal jam. Heavy guitars, heavy vocals, and an in-your-face chorus. Talks about being one’s own worst enemy and realizing that you have always been that to yourself.
Smite – Another heavy one, Smite breaches existential topics while delivering some of the most caveman riff moments that Night’s Edge has ever produced. Crushing breakdown at the end of this one.
Ataecina - Another personal favorite, Ataecina is about obsession, and devotion, and losing one’s own identity in that obsession for another. This song is slow, heavy, and crushingly gothic. The Type O influences really shine through here.
Shapes In Grey Space I: Reaching - ?????
Shapes In Grey Space II: Soaring - ??????
Shapes In Grey Space III: Separating - ??
I actually want to talk about all three of these songs together because lyrically they all tell the same story, the same parable of a Twilight-zone esque situation of a person who awakens in their world to find that everyone else around them has disappeared – what then? How does the absence of others around you affect your own self-image, your own identity? So much of who we think we are is based on how we believe others see us, so once that is removed, where does that leave us?
Musically, each song is different, Reaching is our longest song ever and one of our most progressive, complete with starts and stops and time signature changes and a really epic guitar solo. Soaring is a direct 2.5 minutes of alt metal goodness, with a huge chorus and multiple crushing riffs and breakdowns. Separating is a melodeath-inspired driving song that ties it all together and puts the closing statement on the album. We have never had three songs be directly tied together like this before, so we hope that our fans enjoy us trying something different here!

Alan – How are you received in Baltimore?
Brian - Baltimore is our home, of course, and we love our fans here. They go hard for us at shows. We just played a show her,e and we were blown away by the love that we received.
Alan – And outside of Baltimore? The whole state?
Brian – Within Maryland, there are a few different very cool scenes, one of our favorites is the metal / independent music scene down in the Southern Maryland Tri-County area, it is a place you would never think would have a good music scene, but they really do and we love going down there to play with bands like Roachzilla. They actually put on a really cool festival every year called Roachfest, which we are playing for the first time this August!
Alan – We’ll also hit the road abroad. What kind of responses have you had to your work from abroad?
Brian – We just played up in Rochester, New York, not long ago and had a great time. It is awesome sharing our music with people from different scenes, cities, and states and meeting the people there who are pushing their music as hard as we are. There are so many awesome musicians all working to get themselves heard.
Alan – Regarding playing. Where have you had your greatest successes? While performing?
Brian - Our greatest successes have been putting out each of our albums, with the newest being the best of course. Working on the album and getting through the process of releasing it can kind of remove the magic from it for a time, but looking back, I always end up feeling proud of what we’ve made.
In terms of shows, we have had many awesome shows, including opening slots for bands like Visions of Atlantis or the Birthday Massacre. Any good show outside of our state is also a success for us, with our favorite probably being the festival we played last year at the Brimming Horn Meadery in Milton, DE.
Alan – If you want, you could also write about your biggest failures, but if you don't, don’t write anything.
Brian – Looking back I think the biggest area that I have fallen short is in the production quality specifically of our first two albums. We self-produce our music and I learned how to record, produce, and mix just through working on our albums. I feel like my inexperience on the early releases sold the songs short.
Alan – Let’s try to have some fun, shall we? Do you have any funny experiences from recording albums, videos, or performing?
Brian - So many. We could make a gag reel an hour long. It’s pretty hard to sit and think of specific examples, but we spend basically our entire time together as a band laughing at everything.
Alan – What else are you preparing for the album by the end of the year? Tour? Videos? Special performances?
Brian - We will have a video for our song “Soaring” releasing the same day as the album and are planning on doing one more music video for a different song off the album post-release. We are adding shows for the fall/winter now and are in talks to set up a spring tour on the East Coast of the U.S.
Alan – Do you have a musical role model that you base your band on? Mozart, Vivaldi ....? Just kidding.
Brian - I have a million. Peter Steele from Type O is a huge songwriting and lyrical influence, as is Trent Reznor from NIN. Our influence list is long.

Alan – What would you like to achieve in the future? You have a lot of concerts.
Brian – We try to play as much as we can! All of us work, so we mostly just do weekend warrior-type of shows, but we are working on putting together a short tour for next year.
At the end of the day, I just want to get our music out there. I want people to listen and connect with what we have written. I’ve never made a dime in my life through original music that I didn’t put right back into the band – it’s not for money. It’s for the love of the music, and wanting to share that with others, because when other people are able to connect with our music, it makes our music even better for US. Art and expression are meant to be shared.
Alan – What about Europe? You won’t be heading to Europe?
Brian – We would love to, it is not in the cards at this moment but I have no idea what the future holds! Maybe one day we will be able to do the summer festival circuit in Europe! Wacken would be a dream gig.
Alan – Thanks for the interview. You’re doing a great job. And I hope to see you again sometime.
Brian – Thank you for your time Alan!
