Charlie Harper (UK Subs) interview

Charlie Harper (UK Subs) interview

One of the iconic global figures of Punk, Charlie Harper is the face of the UK Subs group, which has been on the scene and in the spotlight without a break since 1976 to the present. This year, 2025, could be said to be very fruitful for UK Subs and for Charlie. And we will outline this year a little.
Alan – Hi, Charlie. How are you satisfied with this year? 2025?
Charlie - Very satisfied. finally my book came out.

Alan – In today's interview, we will more or less skip touring and focus mainly on the book and music boxes. A lot has been released this year.
Charlie - Yes, my new solo album came out too.

Alan – Who came up with the idea of writing a book about you? An Anarchy of Demons. How did you feel about such a large work being published?
Charlie - I always had an idea to write a book. It took long time, but it’s been well worth it. I wrote it myself.

Alan – How did it all go? Over the internet? Or did you and David (https://www.earthislandbooks.com) sit down and write the whole thing?
Charlie - I wrote it myself and our friends did the proof checking and editing, also David at Earth island Books did some proof checking too.

Alan – Did you have a concept ready, or was everything decided on the spot?
Charlie – I started writing this book back in 2016 and I always had the title in my head, it’s one of my song choruses.

Alan – What is described in the book? I know your whole life, but if you could, briefly write what the reader can expect.
Charlie - Expect to laugh out loud and expect to cry.

Alan – Are there hardships and funny experiences described there?
Charlie – Exactly. Plenty of them.

Alan – I couldn’t help but notice the huge interest in this book. The first signing event and big sale were at Rebellion Fest. You sold and signed about 500 books there? That’s crazy.
Charlie - Yeah,  incredible.

Alan – The next sale is going at full speed, and as I said, it looks like there will be another reprint in time. Did you expect this book to be such a great success?
Charlie - No, you just hope it does well.

Alan – We will continue to look at the book. At the beginning of this interview, I said that from my point of view, it is a fruitful year for you (2025). There are also music boxes coming out: 1x box with a CD, and 1x box with EP singles. Can you also describe this? How much is in the box, who released it, and who is publishingit?
Charlie  - Demon Records will be releasing them, I have not seen them yet.

Alan – Album boxes, who came up with this idea? And what will be the sales coverage?
Charlie - Demon Records, They reissue old stuff, i don't know much about it.

Alan – The assumption is that most of these boxes will be sold during concerts. Yes?
Charlie - No, I think only on mail order?

Alan – Currently, most books are sold at fairs, large events, and pre-sales. When this subsides a little, will you take the books with you to concerts? Or do you already take them to play?
Charlie - I have my first book fair next week, I'm a book fair virgin!

Alan – Some time ago, David and I were talking about whether the book An Anarchy of Demons would remain only in English, or would it be translated into other languages. Into Spanish, Portuguese?
Charlie - I’d like that. We will see. It will come out in Japanese for sure.

Alan – How satisfied are you with this work?
Charlie - About 95%.

Alan – Did you forget anything in the book? What did you remember after the publication?
Charlie - Lots! Too many to write here.

Alan – Thanks for the interview. We will probably do another one about music, concerts, and even free time. What would you like to say to our Czech and Slovak readers?
Charlie - Playing in both countries is always wonderful, we thank the people for giving us such a good time and hope to see you next year!

Alan – Thanks for the interview, and see you.
Charlie - Many thanks.
