Charlie Harper, all about the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Charlie Harper, all about the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Charlie Harper has been a legend of UK punk for almost 50 years. He knew about the scene in our countries even during the times of the previous (Bolshevik) regime.
Alan – Hello again, Charlie. How are the concerts going? And what about this year? Was, or will it
be, in the Czech Republic and Slovakia?
Charlie - Hi Guys.

Alan – Did you learn about punk, the punk scene, and life in the former Czechoslovakia from correspondence from Petr Růžička?
Charlie – Yes.

Alan – When was your first concert (concerts) in Czechoslovakia? And were they through Petr Růžička?
Charlie - Petr did a lot of gigs for us, but I don't think he did the first gig.

Alan – If you could remember, how many times have you played with UK Subs in Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia in 26 years? 100x?
Charlie - I can't remember, but a lot.

Alan – After the collapse of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia became separate countries. Where do you play more often? In the Czech Republic or Slovakia?
Charlie -  Prague I guess.

Alan – I’ll just digress a little from playing, I’ll come back to it later. You like Czech beer. Which brands do you like the most?
Charlie - I love them all but the best one is Pilsner Urquell, we played Pilsner once.

Alan – Which concert or festival do you remember fondly? In Czechoslovakia, in the Czech
Republic, and in Slovakia?
Charlie - Mighty Sounds was good one, and I had one of my birthday parties in Prague last year. Pod Parou too! also there was club in Kosice, Slovakia, it was very unique.

Alan – As I already wrote, you played a lot of concerts in our countries. Do you have any funny
experiences from playing in these countries?
Charlie - Jaz Coleman came to one of Prague show and he ate our roadies dinner.

Alan – What bands do you like from the Czech Republic and Slovakia? You definitely like some,
no?
Charlie – More.

Alan – What do you like in the Czech Republic, and what about Slovakia?
Charlie - People are always nice and welcoming in both countries. There’s good food and beers and beautiful countryside.

Alan – We didn’t mention the local food. At concerts or festivals, it is obvious. But you’ve been to
people’s homes countless times, and they hosted you. What was the most interesting thing you ate in the Czech Republic, and what about Slovakia?
Charlie - Always have nice pickled salad. I love pickles.

Alan – Finally. What will you bring to the next concert in the Czech Republic or Slovakia? Anyone
who follows me or has read the previous interview will know.
Charlie - Hopefully, we can come back in Czech Republic or/and Slovakia.

Thanks for the interview, and we look forward to meeting again.
Charlie – Thanx.
